six teenagers. one camcorder. no escape.

Made in 1999, when I was 18, the experiment was to shoot a feature film in one night.

One of the longest, strangest no-budget movies ever made, this all-improvised, experimental documentary-style drama/comedy, shot in a single night, follows six teenagers as they attempt to create a horror film and instead discover horror, humor and truth inside one another.

Have you been watching too many horror movies lately? So had the former cast of Dr. Fred when they set out into the woods to create "The Animal Game," a strange tale inspired by all those low-budget, high-profit slasher flicks shot from the point of view of the director's single camera.

A somewhat disturbed teenage director has invited three friends over to appear in a movie. But he has no script, and will tell them nothing, only rambling endlessly about the failure of evolution. Over the course of a very long night they will push each other to the very brink of madness.

The cast themselves had a few problems, seeing that the movie was actually recorded in one night, in realtime, with no script and very little preparation beforehand. The result was a 2 1/2 hour film which is both funny and creepy, and captures a lot of the tension of that time in our lives - We had just graduated high school, and were wondering what was going to become of us. It's held up better than other films I made around the same time, and I still find it interesting to watch.

Written by and starring Garrett Gilchrist as Larry, David Ashe as Mike. Ben Sipprell as Richard, Justin Bielawa as Griff, Steve Nagy as Jimmy, and Tal Pearson as Sam.
