CURIOUS FACTS: There are obvious references to the art of making horror movies throughout. The "cabin in the woods" plotline in Mike's movie is based on The Evil Dead.
Sam the sound guy [AKA Dr. Johnson] wears a gas-station attendant shirt with a leopard-print collar and a nametag reading "Korn."
Sam's "boom mike" is a hollow drum stick hooked up to a tiny amp. It was previously used for shooting spitballs.
Larry's house belonged to Ben Sipprell, who plays Dick.
Griff [Justin Bielawa] wears a cap reading "Special Effects Crew - Wing Commander," which he also wore in "Dr. Fred's The Phantom Movie." Some of Griff's part references "Blair Witch," as in looking for cigarettes, singing "Gilligan's island," and disappearing mysteriously.
The masks were previously used in the "Dr. Fred" movies.
Mike's camcorder is an ancient Betacam from the 80s. It doesn't work.Griff's is a brownie home movie camera from the 60s. It doesn't work. Dick's is a VHS-C camcorder from the 90s. It works, but isn't used. Larry's
is a Hi-8 Sony Handicam.
In the original planned ending to the movie, Mike [Rabbit] died. The improvisational style led to a much stranger
ending featuring Dick [the fox]. Although the characters never admit it, there may indeed be something dangerous in those woods: Griff's
American Flag is found hanging from a treebranch at the end, a final warning, one of many little clues.
There were no second takes in this shooting, which indeed all took place in one night as it appears onscreen, and the five hours of rough footage could actually be watched as a finished movie by those patient enough. Any screwups were included as part of the plot.
