He's back! In spite of popular demand!
RADIO MAN: THE WEB SERIES
Episode 1: "I am on the Video"

(9 minutes, 19 MB, requires Quicktime 6)

Radio Man has ... against all better judgement and sanity ... been a recurring feature at my other site, FFrevolution.com, since it started in 2001. He's done 10 radio episodes, 3 half-hour radio specials, and 6 live stand-up acts ... along with a trailer for an unmade film. And I say, the best kind of horse to beat is a dead horse, so I'm proud to announce that Radio Man has finally done what I thought he'd never do ... he's become a video man. Strangely, he's still doing the same old radio show. Except we can see him now.

In the first episode of this new web series, Radio Man reunites with his old friend Deejay, and learns some important lessons about his own sexuality. He also performs the "Flower Song." Twice. Radio Man's mom's fish are also involved. More are coming soon.

RADIO MAN: THE WEB SERIES
Episode 2: "Deejay Has a Drug Problem"

(8 minutes, 16.7 MB, requires Quicktime 6)

In this very special after school special, Radio Man has to confront his best friend ... because his best friend has a drug problem. That's right folks, Deejay is hooked on the smack, and only Radio Man can save him. This very special episode tackles the rampant drug problem in our country. Also: Radio Man sings "The Potato/11 song!" Don't miss it! Or do. See if I care.

RADIO MAN: THE WEB SERIES
Episode 3: "Radio Man Finds a Mate"

(9.5 minutes, 28.7 MB, requires Quicktime 6)

BEWARE! The MONSTER seeks a MATE! In this episode, Radio Man explains why his shows have been a bit crap lately - he's been distracted. You see, Radio Man is in LOVE! Yes, love is in the air, and you'll find out all the creepy details, as we head to the inevitable conclusion. Plus, Radio Man sings his new hit song, "The King of All Fish," and some other songs.

This is one of the last of the "regular," normal boring episodes I've got taped - I've been releasing these first rather than the more interesting "special" episodes, because the special episodes are harder to edit, and I've got a lot of other things I have to do right now. But there will be some very special episodes coming up, I promise ... that will make sitting through this batch worthwhile. I've also shot quite a bit of a a full-length Radio Man Holiday Special. Beware.

New video! Gods of L.A. Teaser: "Jules on Film" (Quicktime, 9.7 MB)

This is not a trailer, but a very unusual kind of teaser for Gods of Los Angeles ... my long-in-the-making drama which is coming at the end of this year.

Even though I've been editing nonstop, I haven't put out a new video clip at this site in a couple months ... so lemme break the silence with this ... enjoy. This teaser consists entirely of a scene which won't be in the final movie, but which I like anyway ... and I thought the subject matter might make it ... um ... ironically appropriate as a teaser for a film. This teaser was shot in ... March or April 2002, I forget.

It stars Mariana McConnell as Jules Kirschner, and Cori Haisler as Lily Benton. Cinematography was by Jason Gutierrez. Sound recording and boom operation was by Jason Gutierrez. Camerawork was by Garrett Gilchrist, who also wrote, directed and edited the film.

I'll probably be doing a final revised trailer for the film just before it actually comes out. For now ... Consider this clip my comment.

Merry Christmas, everyone! A quick update.

A note about one of my side projects ... for a couple of years now I've been doing merchandise design for the official Neil Innes website. Mr. Innes has been a great inspiration to me for many years - I've been a fan since high school. A legend of British music and comedy, he appeared in some of the Monty Python films and is best known for his work with the Bonzo Dog Band, the Rutles, and his TV series The Innes Book of Records. Well, now I'm designing CDs and things for the site, you can buy the Live at Martyrs CD and lots of other items designed by me. Mr. Innes appeared in Gods of Los Angeles in a small role as a school counselor and was excellent, but I am still not sure if he's getting cut out or not - I still have to shoot the rest of the scene(s)!

Indulgence is out on DVD from Blanc Screen Cinema, and I don't know whether to recommend it or not. Directed by Jay Bauman and cowritten, with cinematography by and starring myself, I really worked hard on this film and tried to give a good performance. Unfortunately, every time Jay Bauman finishes a film he decides to hate and tell lies about the star of his last film. I was his latest victim. He treated me horribly during the shoot - his idea of payback for something or other, I assume.

In a pretty hilarious turn of events, Jay (and Lauren Burke) have recorded for the DVD two separate commentaries that consist entirely of Jay not even talking about (or watching) the movie, but just talking about what an asshole I am.

As for the film itself, I'm still proud of it - I don't know if I make the best leading man, but there are some good performances in the film. It's worth seeing, but I don't know if you should give Jay your money! Heheh.

Also coming out on DVD this past year was Oranges: Revenge of the Eggplant, directed by Mike Stoklasa, formerly of GMP Pictures (now of Red Letter Media). I did some casting and second unit voice directing and helped Mike out a little with this movie ... he needed some voice actors so I got him the talented Mr. Riley O'Malley, and Gods of Los Angeles star Katherine Carpenter (Hoagland). So, Katherine voices a talking orange.

He didn't credit me for my work. Mike and I have kind of drifted apart as well I guess. As for the film, it's not as good as the original Oranges: The Movie ... it's visually quite nice but a bit dull. Still, if you see it around ...

So yeah, at the moment it looks like this is how Orange Cow's partnership with Blanc Screen Cinema and GMP Pictures ends. We first met in 2001 and we made a lot of good films together ... and a few dumb ones ... Gorilla Interrupted (and Groins of Darkness), Indulgence, Ghostbusted, Torgo and the Quest for Fuck, Ghostbusted 2, Ghostbusted 3, the bits I did for Pervert Goes Home (Porno Jesus) and Clowns and Suicide (Squiffy the Derelict Cat), Cave Men, the Camp FF3 movie, scenes for Gods of Los Angeles (with Rich Evans), Talking to People About Star Wars, scenes for Transients (Jason Santo short), the voice stuff for Oranges: Revenge of the Eggplant, the episode of Monkey Make Movie I was in, the episode of Camp FF 1 Mike and Rich were in ... God, I'm trying to remember it all. I've probably forgotten some things. Seemed like for about 3 years we were always involved in each other's projects. We laughed together, we realized we were all crazy together, we developed unrequited crushes on the same women ...

But times and people do change, and things do come to an end. With the amount of raging psychoses going on, it had to collapse sometime. Mike Stoklasa is in Arizona now, no longer making movies with Rich Evans (not at the moment anyway). And Jay Bauman ... let's not even talk about Jay Bauman.

Still, if it really is over, I don't regret the time I spent with that group. We had a lot of fun. Did some fun stuff, had a few laughs.

Hope you had some too.

Happy new year, everyone. Happy new you, and happy new me.

A quick note on another little side project of mine.

Star Wars: Deleted Magic.
Deleted scenes. Alternate footage. A look behind the scenes at what didn't make it to the final cut of the Star Wars trilogy.

The big project I'm editing right now is, of course, Gods of Los Angeles. But to relax and take my mind off of that, I've been editing a little documentary about the Star Wars deleted scenes. Just a fun side project.

I have deconstructed the film, putting deleted footage, behind the scenes footage, alternate sound and video, and notes on how the film came together in editing ... it's a completely different vision of the first Star Wars that will give you an idea as to what was cut out, and how the film was made and put together.

Hope you like it.

I have printed off to tape one hour and 45 minutes of Gods of Los Angeles: the rough cut. Which is a rough cut of just the first 3/4 of the film or so. The ending still isn't edited together yet. This is the first rough cut. The partial early rough cut.

It's put together as a finished film. Because it was made for the composer it lacks a musical score, apart from a bunch of songs I've put in there to make it work as a movie - songs by Ryan Winford, Neil Innes, Davi Kutz and Ken Thornton. The opening titles aren't in there (they're currently being done by John Brugmann). There are two "scene missing" cards early on. The last fourth of the film isn't there at all yet - it's not yet edited. And in the later part of the movie, only the Bruce storyline is shown - the Lily scenes aren't edited yet!

Otherwise, this is the movie, Gods of Los Angeles. And it's nice to actually see it work as a film.

I have color corrected every frame of the movie. Final Cut Pro can do some amazing things with an image, and I realized pretty quickly that lowering the contrast of the image resulted in a more pleasing and less harsh picture ... more "filmic" really.

More specifically, lowering the white level and raising the black level while keeping the midtones consistent, while also raising the color saturation and shifting the hues a little bit to the greener side of the spectrum, while occasionally shifting the image to be bluer or yellower, depending on the scene .... that resulted in a more pleasing image.

I'm much happier with how the film looks now, and it's really brought out colors and details in the image that just couldn't be seen before. It's easier for me to watch it as a film now that it's color corrected.

The film is currently too long, of course. The rough cut comprises less than 3/4 of the final film, but is already 1 hour 45 minutes in length. I have already started cutting out scenes, and parts of scenes. Plenty was cut out from this rough cut as I was compiling it.

But I'm happy with it. Happier with it than anything else I've ever done.

As usual, if you want to see it, contact me.

The final film will be released ... soon. At the very end of this year or early next year.

Haven't been able to edit for a while. Didn't have a camera. On June 1st my new camera finally arrived. It's lovely. And now I work.

Started the week by editing the ending to Ghostbusted 3. Just the ending, not the rest of it. That includes the big finale fight with the Ghostmaster, and the office scene and chase that precede it. I am glad to report that the scenes are fucking hilarious.

The rest of the film probably won't be edited particularly soon, as I am working on Gods every day. But maybe.

Anyway, I've moved on. Working on Gods of Los Angeles material now. Just edited a scene with Lily and her father ... the last one of David Lawrence's scenes that were actually shot. I had forgotten how incredibly tedious and time consuming and difficult editing Gods of Los Angeles was. Editing Ghostbusted 3 was a lark, very fun to do. This is pure tedium. I was like, ohhh, I remember this!

There is just so much footage ..... so very much footage. And when I edit Gods, I have to be incredibly careful, slow and methodical. I separate each take of each line out and put them together, whether the person is on camera when they say it or not ... there are often over a dozen takes of each line to choose from. The edit has to be the best possible edit of the footage. It takes at least a day to edit each scene .... which will be about 2 minutes of screen time.

But all is going well. The movie is on track. I am surviving!

Working on a fantasy script, currently titled "Kings of Eternity." It's a new version of a script Dave Ashe and I had talked about doing two years ago. I suspect it is way too expensive and complicated to actually shoot. Without a lot of money. Anyone have money they can give me?

Also revising Musical of the Living Dead.

I'm graduating USC, so this is the last Sugarhigh Crusade strip I'll ever do for The Daily Trojan.

The definition of bittersweet, there.

Will Sugarhigh ever return? I've got several dozen more strips written that I'd like to do. But unless I'm picked up by some little local publication, or do an indie comic, or that Sugarhigh adventure game I was thinking about ... this is it.

Bye, folks. Been a nice 4 1/2 years.

View all the Sugarhigh cartoons, and my Mr. Flopsy political cartoons, at the Sugarhigh Crusade website: http://orangecow.org/sugarhigh

(editor's note: Shortly after writing this, I won a few awards at the Daily Trojan awards - the $50 Best Editorial Writing-Graphic Arts for a political cartoon I did about Arnold Schwarzenegge, and my editor Wendy Gorton gave me a special "Guy Whose Stuff is So Good He Should Be Famous" award, for Sugarhigh. Aw. It was a nice night. Goodbye, Daily Trojan. Goodbye, Lord Aleric Sugarhigh, Toshiro, Joel and Miss 749. I'll miss you all.)

Finished writing a full-length play (screenplay? play?) entitled Linguine and Clams. Although simple and unambitious, I actually think this is better written, for the most part, than any of my other scripts. However, I don't intend to shoot it - because it is very simple, and because it's based too much on certain parts of my own life, and I just feel too close to it right now. Without going into too much detail, it reminds me a lot of a relationship I've been in which has just ended.

The story is about a young man named Tom who really isn't doing anything with his life. He is being haunted by his dead best friend, Steve, who bugs him constantly to do something with himself. Tom has a crush on his other best friend, Karen ... he's had this crush for years without saying anything. Meanwhile Karen starts a self-help program created by a man named Bradley Whitlock, where the idea is to force yourself to get your life in gear in 15 days. And Steve thinks Tom can only do that by telling Karen he likes her ....

I turn 23 tomorrow.

Live Video: Radio Man is a Poet! (Realplayer)

Our own Radio Man is at it again. On tuesday, March 23rd, 2004, he appeared for the sixth and final time at USC's Ground Zero, as part of the "Best of SC Talent Showcase." Sandwiches and bug juice were served, and a whole bunch of USC students performed music, poetry and dancing. But the students didn't quite know what to make of Radio Man, who stumbled onstage to bare his soul as a poet, performing deep, thoughtful poems about loneliness and the 1980s cartoon series "He-Man And the Masters of the Universe." Previously, Radio Man had taken off his pants onstage, become a self-help guru speaking on the subject of Sonic the Hedgehog, and had an unsuccessful run for Governor of California. Read afirst-person account of the performance here, written by our own Garrett Gilchrist. All in all, Garrett performed stand-up comedy seven times at Groundzero - six short performances as Radio Man, during which he was thrown off the stage at least twice, once being thrown physically by a very large man ... there was also a performance Garrett did not as Radio Man but as himself, entitled "I Want to Have Sex With Your Cat." It lasted a full seventy minutes and received approximately 15 walkouts and one laugh during its entire duration. Most of these performances are (or will be) available on audio CD and video from Orange Cow. Anyway, sit back, relax, and by the power of Greyskull enjoy Radio Man is a Poet! (Quicktime Video)
